BOSfluids 7.0: Support for building 2-D piping models

The ability to work with 3-D piping models has always been one of the fundamental features of BOSfluids. This not only sets BOSfluids apart from similar software but also makes it possible to obtain more accurate results, especially if the flow conditions of interest are affected by the geometry of the piping system. On the other hand, building a 3-D piping model may involve a larger effort than building an equivalent 2-D network model with elevation information. This larger effort may not always be offset by a relevant gain in accuracy.

The latest BOSfluids release therefore adds support for building and viewing a piping system as a 2-D network. This enables you to drag (new) elements onto a 2-D canvas, and connect those elements graphically by means of mouse operations. The element and node properties can be specified in the usual way, but instead of specifying the element dimensions, you need to specify the element lengths and node elevations. All familiar features provided by the BOSfluids user interface, including support for managing element and node groups, are available when working with 2-D piping models.

BOSfluids keeps track of both the 2-D and 3-D geometry of a model. When part of the geometry information has not been specified, BOSfluids will complete that information in such a way that the geometry of the model remains consistent. This means that you can switch between a 2-D and 3-D model view at any time. This also means that you can start with a 2-D network model, and then gradually specify the 3-D geometry for those parts of the model where that is needed. By supporting both 2-D and 3-D piping models BOSfluids has become an even more versatile and unique tool for the analysis of flow conditions in piping systems.
