DRG » Knowledge Base Articles » BOSfluids: Two-phase flood and drain analyses
When an empty, or gas-filled, piping system is rapidly filled with a liquid, then significant forces can be exerted by the liquid on the system, especially when the liquid hits a significant flow restriction or the end point of a pipeline section. Indeed, there have been multiple incidents involving firewater systems in which these forces caused significant damage to the piping system.
This BOSfluids release adds support for performing flood and drain analyses, bringing you a unique and effective tool for predicting the expected forces and for avoiding damage to a piping system. It can be used, among others, to simulate the flooding of dry firewater systems and the draining of fuel systems by flushing them with gas. The piping system may have an arbitrary complex topology as BOSfluids can handle the breaking up and merging of multiple gas volumes. The pressure within each gas volume is assumed to be equal throughout the entire volume but will change in time as the volume moves through the system and interacts with deluge nozzles and air valves. The new flood and drain module extends the scope of BOSfluids from single-phase transient flow phenomena to a limited but important range of two-phase flow phenomena. It does that with the computational efficiency that you might expect from BOSfluids so that you can perform flood and drain analyses of complex and large piping systems in more or less the same time that a single-phase transient analysis would take.
Although the flood and drain module has been tested and validated extensively, the user interface is still considered to be under development and will probably be improved based on feedback from its users. The flood and drain module is therefore released as a preview feature that can be made available on request.
